Sony Reveals Mixed News on PS5 Themes

Author : Simon May 25,2025

Sony has recently provided an update regarding the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes available for the PS5, along with insights on the future of such themes. In a tweet, Sony announced that these beloved themes will be removed from the PS5 on January 31, 2025. However, there's a silver lining for fans; Sony has confirmed that these themes will make a comeback in the future.

“Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow,” Sony stated. “Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

While the return of the classic themes is exciting news, Sony also shared some disappointing information. In a follow-up tweet, the company revealed that there are no plans to develop additional themes for the PS5 in the future. Sony's statement read:

“While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”

This news has left fans feeling let down, especially since themes were a popular feature in previous PlayStation consoles. Despite the PS5's launch, Sony has not introduced new themes for this generation, and it appears that won't change.

The nostalgia themes, which were introduced to commemorate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation on December 3, 2024, allowed PS5 users to customize their home screen and menus to reflect the aesthetics of the PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4. Each theme brought unique elements: the PSOne theme featured the iconic console on the home screen background, the PS2 theme incorporated its distinctive menu shapes, the PS3 theme displayed its signature wave background, and the PS4 theme echoed its wave patterns. Additionally, all themes included the respective console's sound effects, enhancing the nostalgic experience for users.
