Rainn Wilson, star of The Office, shared that continuing the beloved comedy series without Steve Carell was a significant hurdle, as Carell left two seasons before the show’s finale.
In an interview with Variety, Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, noted that Carell’s exit was anticipated by the cast due to his rising demand for film roles. "We saw it coming for quite a while," Wilson remarked.
However, the absence of Carell’s character, Michael Scott, left the show searching for its rhythm, with Wilson describing the backstage atmosphere as "somewhat turbulent" during this transition.
"Steve’s departure threw things into disarray," Wilson explained, "as we grappled with the show’s tone, its new lead, and how to craft stories without Michael Scott, the comedic heart of the series, and one of America’s finest comic actors at its core. It was a real challenge."
Carell had already built a film career before The Office, with roles in Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but his portrayal of Dunder Mifflin’s quirky regional manager skyrocketed his fame.
The Office also propelled the careers of Wilson and co-star John Krasinski.

Following Carell’s exit, the show’s final seasons introduced new characters portrayed by James Spader and Catherine Tate in senior roles, culminating in a final season that tied up the original characters’ arcs, including Dwight’s wedding to Angela, marked by Carell’s brief cameo return.
Fans of The Office can look forward to The Paper, a new spin-off premiering this September, co-created by Greg Daniels and starring Domhnall Gleeson. The mockumentary-style series, set in a struggling local newspaper office, will feature The Office’s Oscar in a recurring role.
Carell has confirmed he will not appear in The Paper, stating there’s "no real reason" for Michael Scott to be involved.
