I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for the journey shared with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my gratitude for your fantastic company this past summer. Today's update is packed with game reviews, new releases, and some enticing sales! Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances with many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection joins the ranks. This collection features Miles Edgeworth's adventures, building upon previous storylines. The sequel enhances the original, offering a satisfying experience.

The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. Gameplay remains similar to the main series—gathering clues, interrogating witnesses, and solving cases—but the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flair. While the pacing might feel less structured at times, fans of the main series will appreciate this spin-off. If the first game feels slow, persevere—the second is significantly better.

Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A convenient dialogue history is also included.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling contrast between its two games, resulting in a highly enjoyable overall experience. The localization of the second game is a significant achievement, making this a must-have for fans. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney title is now available on Switch.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome addition. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six extensive levels provide a demanding experience, though an easier mode is available for those seeking a less intense playthrough.

Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as a weapon, vehicle, and puzzle-solving tool. New collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for tackling difficult sections. The game's difficulty is comparable to the original, with generous checkpoints mitigating frustration. The charming visuals and music enhance the experience.

While completion time can vary, the challenge remains a core element. Expect to die often, but the rewarding gameplay and clever use of Yumetaro's star and enemies will keep you engaged.

Gimmick! 2 is a remarkable sequel, successfully building upon the original while maintaining its unique identity. Fans of the first game and challenging platformers will be thrilled. However, those seeking a more relaxed experience should be aware of the demanding difficulty.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience. While the Switch's performance might show its age, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain compelling.

The game's weapon system is a highlight, requiring players to juggle their primary weapon, melee attacks, and a rotating third weapon to maintain offensive capabilities. Mastering this rhythm is crucial for survival. The dash mechanic also adds a layer of strategic depth.

While performance might be better on other platforms, the Switch version delivers a satisfying experience. Fans of the original will appreciate the familiar atmosphere, and those seeking a challenging shoot 'em up will find it engaging.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to existing fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in its fan service, offering engaging writing and meta-systems.

However, the limited number of mini-games and repetitive gameplay might disappoint non-fans. The story unfolds primarily for those familiar with the Umamusume universe. Even for fans, the game's focus might feel misplaced.

While the presentation and unlockables are strong points, the limited content might lead to short playtime, even for dedicated fans. Non-fans will likely find little to keep them engaged.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, offering three charming 8-bit titles. Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola are presented with modern conveniences like save states, rewind, and display options. Full localization is a noteworthy achievement.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations is challenging, Ripple Island is a solid adventure, and The Wing of Madoola is the most ambitious but also the most inconsistent. While none are top-tier NES titles, they possess a unique charm.

Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these titles, especially their localization, makes this a worthwhile purchase.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
