Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Reflects on Past Mistakes and Future Plans
In a candid interview at PAX West 2024, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer discussed key moments in his career, acknowledging past missteps and outlining future ambitions for the gaming giant. He openly admitted to some of the "worst decisions" made regarding major franchises, highlighting missed opportunities with Destiny and Guitar Hero.
Despite his close proximity to Bungie during his early days at Xbox, Spencer admitted that Destiny's initial appeal eluded him. It wasn't until the House of Wolves expansion that he fully grasped the game's potential. Similarly, he expressed initial skepticism towards Guitar Hero, a decision he now recognizes as a significant error.
While acknowledging these setbacks, Spencer emphasized his forward-looking approach, focusing on current and future projects. One such project is Dune: Awakening, an action RPG adaptation of the iconic Dune franchise, slated for release on Xbox Series S, PC, and PS5.
However, Funcom, the developer of Dune: Awakening, has encountered challenges optimizing the game for the Xbox Series S, leading to a PC-first release strategy. Despite these hurdles, Funcom’s chief product officer, Scott Junior, assures players that the game will perform well even on older hardware.
Meanwhile, the indie title Entoria: The Last Song has experienced significant delays on Xbox due to a lack of communication and response from Microsoft. Developer Jyamma Games expressed frustration over the situation, leaving the Xbox release uncertain while the game launches on PlayStation 5 and PC. The developer highlights the lack of response from Xbox as the key reason for the delay, despite having a completed version ready for submission.
