Wizards of the Coast DMCA Strikes Fan's Baldur's Gate 3 Mod, Larian CEO Reacts

Author : Charlotte May 03,2025

Wizards of the Coast has recently taken down a fan-created mod for Stardew Valley titled "Baldur's Village," which introduced characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the game. This action followed shortly after the mod's release earlier this month, despite receiving public praise from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who had commended the mod's creativity and the love poured into its development.

The mod's removal came as a result of a DMCA takedown notice issued by Wizards of the Coast, the holder of the Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate intellectual properties. A spokesperson from Nexus Mods expressed hope that this might be an oversight on Wizards of the Coast's part, suggesting they often rely on external agencies to identify and address IP violations. The spokesperson remains optimistic about a potential reversal of the decision.

In response to the takedown, Sven Vincke took to Twitter to reaffirm his support for the mod while acknowledging the complexities of IP protection. He emphasized the value of fan-made mods, stating, "Free quality fan mods highlighting your characters in other game genres are proof your work resonates and a unique form of word of mouth." Vincke advocated for a more nuanced approach to handling such fan creations, distinguishing them from commercial ventures that infringe on IP rights.

This incident may be indicative of a broader strategy by Wizards of the Coast to protect the Baldur's Gate IP, especially in light of upcoming announcements hinted at during the Game Developers Conference. Whether the takedown of the Stardew Valley mod was a deliberate move or an error remains unclear. We have reached out to Wizards of the Coast for further clarification on this matter.
