The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Emily Jan 07,2025

This is it, folks! My final retro game eShop list, primarily because I'm running low on retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, resulting in a legendary game collection that continues to see re-releases. These titles, once a challenge to Nintendo, are now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlayStation showcase begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa is a fantastic platformer that deserved more recognition. A successful 2.5D title, it features a charming floppy-eared protagonist navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. The game boasts vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't quite as strong, the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market. Square Enix's masterpiece propelled the PlayStation to success. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable dated graphics. Its enduring appeal is undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation giant, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, offering thrilling gameplay and a less philosophically-driven narrative. The fun factor is high, and its PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's delve into a niche gem. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series to 3D. While the polygons haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. Vibrant colors, an enjoyable enemy capture system, and inventive bosses make this a top-tier shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while not reaching the heights of Chrono Trigger, stands as a brilliant and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit sometimes underdeveloped, cast of characters. It also features one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I enjoy most Mega Man games, nostalgia clouds my judgment. For non-fans, I recommend Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 feels exceptionally well-crafted. The Legacy Collections are highly recommended for a definitive experience.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure elements with satisfying action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins mastermind, it’s deceptively challenging.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation version forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure and a rewarding combat system. The collection also includes a second solid title.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is iconic. While quality varied across her five adventures, the original excels with its focus on tomb raiding. This remastered collection allows you to experience the first three games.

moon ($18.99)

A lesser-known Japanese title, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, leaning more towards adventure gameplay. While not consistently fun, its unique approach and message make it a worthwhile experience.

That concludes the list! What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts below! I hope you enjoyed this series. Thanks for reading!
