Jack Black Builds Mansion on Private Minecraft Movie Server

Author : Connor May 06,2025

The recently released *A Minecraft Movie* has taken an innovative approach to authenticity by setting up a private Minecraft server for its cast and crew. This immersive experience allowed everyone involved to dive deep into the game's world, enhancing the film's connection to the beloved video game. Jack Black, who portrays Steve in the movie, embraced this opportunity wholeheartedly, constructing a grand mansion atop the highest mountain within the server. His creation wasn't just any structure; it featured a unique art gallery in its basement, showcasing his dedication to proving himself as a "real Minecrafter."

Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson shared with IGN that having Minecraft readily available created an atmosphere reminiscent of an indie game studio, buzzing with creativity and ideas. Although not all concepts could be integrated into the film due to its ongoing development, the server allowed the team to add special touches that made the movie feel true to the game's spirit.

Director Jared Hess praised Jack Black's commitment, noting his methodical approach to playing Minecraft. Black spent time in his trailer harvesting resources like lapis lazuli and constantly building, bringing fresh ideas to the set. "It was so much fun," Hess remarked, highlighting how Black's enthusiasm contributed to a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Jack Black himself humorously explained his dedication, saying, "I had an Xbox in my trailer and I did play because *an actor prepares.*" He aimed to stand out among the cast and crew by building his impressive mansion, complete with a stairway to Steve and an art gallery, on the server's highest peak.

Ólafsson confirmed that Black's mansion is still standing on the server, even extending its availability for a year. He recounted a recent visit where he encountered two security guards from the set still actively using the server, warmly welcoming him back.

While it's uncertain if audiences will ever see Jack Black's 'Real Minecrafter' Mansion on screen, the behind-the-scenes stories add a delightful layer to the film's production. The use of a Minecraft server not only fostered creativity but also brought the game's world to life in a unique way.
