"First Adult LEGO Buy: Mario Set, No Regrets"

Author : Caleb May 14,2025

As a practical person, my spending habits have always leaned towards essentials, with the occasional splurge on discounted video games. However, last year marked a shift when I considered purchasing something purely for enjoyment—a LEGO set. Growing up, I adored building LEGO, but as an adult, the high costs deterred me. Sets linked to popular franchises like movies or video games often come with a hefty price tag, which is why it took me a while to justify buying the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It had been on sale since October of the previous year, priced under $50, and I finally decided my desk could use a new, albeit quirky, potted plant.

My interest in this set was sparked by IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. Being a lifelong fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the perfect homage to the franchise. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical yet slightly menacing charm of the Piranha Plant.

Having now built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, where I imagine tending to my Piranha Plant during work hours. The build itself was both enjoyable and engaging, taking just an afternoon to complete yet challenging enough to keep me focused. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has definitely piqued my interest in collecting more.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets can be pricey, especially the adult-targeted releases that often exceed $200. It's crucial to balance indulging in a passion with financial responsibility. For me, the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, was a justifiable purchase. The joy of building it and the daily happiness it brings me affirm that the cost was worthwhile. While I might be willing to spend more for that little bit of happiness, $50 remains my threshold for now.
