Apex Legends Battle Pass U-Turn: Respawn Reverses Controversial Changes

Following intense player backlash, Respawn Entertainment has performed a 180 on their proposed Apex Legends battle pass overhaul. The developer announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the controversial two-part, $9.99 battle pass system, eliminating the 950 Apex Coin purchase option, is scrapped. The upcoming Season 22 update on August 6th will retain the original system.

Respawn acknowledged communication failures and pledged improved transparency. They confirmed the return of the 950 Apex Coin Premium Battle Pass for Season 22, prioritizing player concerns about cheating, stability, and quality-of-life improvements. Patch notes detailing stability fixes are expected on August 5th.

The Original Plan and the Public Backlash

The revised battle pass structure is now:

  • Free Pass
  • Premium Pass (950 Apex Coins)
  • Ultimate Edition ($9.99)
  • Ultimate+ Edition ($19.99)

Payment is required once per season for all tiers. This simplification directly addresses the original proposal's criticisms.

The July 8th announcement of a two-part battle pass, requiring separate $9.99 payments, ignited a firestorm of protest. Players felt the change was unfair, especially considering the previous option of purchasing the full battle pass for 950 Apex Coins or a $9.99 coin bundle. The new premium+ option, replacing the previous premium bundle, at $19.99 per half-season, further fueled the outrage.

Negative Community Reaction

The outcry was immediate and widespread, flooding X and the Apex Legends subreddit with negative feedback. The Steam page for Apex Legends saw a massive influx of negative reviews, reaching 80,587 at the time of writing.

While the reversal is welcomed, many players feel the initial proposal was a serious misstep. The strong reaction underscores the importance of player feedback in game development. Respawn's response, while a positive step towards regaining player trust, highlights the need for better communication and responsiveness to community concerns. Players eagerly await the August 5th patch notes and the promised improvements to Season 22.
