CEO Travis Willingham shared in an interview with Business Insider that an announcement could be just around the corner, stating it might happen "any day." While specifics about the game's title or its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham emphasized that the development team is diligently working on the project.
Willingham elaborated on the interactive nature of the upcoming game, expressing excitement about players being able to "get their hands on the stick and control the outcome of the story." This approach will allow players to influence the narrative, impacting both beloved characters and introducing new elements within the world of Exandria.
Willingham, who is not only an actor but also a star of Critical Role, co-founded the company alongside other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its launch, Critical Role has expanded into a vast universe, with one of its most successful ventures being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The forthcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects without necessarily being a direct extension of them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in the "active pursuit" of developing this video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year journey. It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's established campaigns or introduce an original story within the Critical Role universe.
Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into 2025, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham reflected on the collaborations with various partners as "little toe dips in the pool," suggesting a cautious approach to entering the interactive entertainment industry amidst its current challenges and transformations.
