Alongside the release date, Sandfall Interactive shared detailed insights into the game's new characters and its innovative gameplay mechanics.
New Characters of Expedition 33: Monoco and Esquie
The full cast of characters for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been revealed, expanding to include seven fully playable characters and one dedicated to exploration. Among the new additions are the intriguing Monoco and Esquie.
Monoco, described as a "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," adds a unique twist to combat. Gestrals, who view competition as a form of meditation, allow Monoco to transform into defeated enemies, utilizing their powers. This unique ability makes Monoco an exciting addition to the team, especially since Gestrals are immune to the Paintress’s influence.
Esquie, known as the oldest and strongest being in the world, takes a more supportive role. This character enables the team to access various locations across the open world map, requiring the retrieval of special stones to unlock new abilities and reach previously inaccessible areas.
The other playable characters, introduced in a YouTube video on October 16, 2024, include Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso. Despite their diverse personalities and motivations, they unite to break the cycle of death.
Turn-Based Combat Innovation and Deep Character Customization
Sandfall Interactive aims to elevate Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 beyond mere aesthetics by revamping the classic turn-based RPG combat system, as highlighted in an Xbox Wire article dated January 23, 2025.
"We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face," stated CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche. "We wanted it to feel like a real game. Each character has their own playstyle, and you can really play them in a lot of different ways – yet they feel distinct from one another with unique mechanics and skill trees."
The game introduces a reactive turn-based system that blends real-time elements, allowing players to dodge attacks or counter with massive damage through parrying. Characters can unleash powerful attacks by pressing specific buttons. To cater to all skill levels, difficulty settings can be adjusted to modify the parry and dodge windows.
Character customization in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is deeply rewarding. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune's ability to accumulate and utilize "Stain" to enhance her abilities. Players can also evolve "Pictos," equipment modifiers, into permanent "Luminas" passive effects after four battles, offering numerous build possibilities.
With extensive customization options through Luminas, unique skills, and abilities, players can experiment with countless builds to tailor their gameplay experience. The reactive turn-based combat system challenges both strategic thinking and reflexes, ensuring a dynamic and engaging adventure in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
