Hideo Kojima, renowned for his work on the Metal Gear series, has provided an update on his much-anticipated project, Physint. Described as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Kojima told Le Film Francais that fans will have to wait "another five or six years" before they can experience this new "action espionage" game. This timeline comes as Kojima continues to juggle multiple projects following his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.
Since going independent, Kojima has received numerous offers to develop games, but his focus remains on completing Death Stranding 2 and now Physint. "I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio," Kojima stated, as translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX. He emphasized that Physint would be a significant undertaking, requiring at least half a decade to come to fruition.
Kojima's long-term goal of directing a movie remains on hold until these gaming projects are completed. "But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film," he mentioned, noting his deep connection to cinema and his desire to pay tribute to it. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"
The announcement of Physint was made by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst back in January 2024. Initially, Kojima hinted that the project would blend elements of both gaming and film, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that it would be a form of "Digital Entertainment" akin to a movie in terms of its production values and storytelling.
Alongside Physint, Kojima Productions is also working on Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios. OD features actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on June 26, and actor Norman Reedus, who stars in the franchise, has hinted at his role in the upcoming film adaptation, stating in an interview with IGN that "of course" he would play himself in the movie.
In other news, Kojima recently shared insights into his creative process, revealing discarded game ideas, including a 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses memories and abilities if the player takes extended breaks. He also disclosed that he has left his staff a USB stick filled with game ideas to be explored after his passing.
