Following the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, it sounds like the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox will continue to flourish. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Switch platform, viewing it as a valuable means to reach gamers who aren't typically on Xbox or PC platforms.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer was asked about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He responded by emphasizing that, just as Xbox has been supporting the original Switch, it aims to extend that support to the Switch 2. "Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it's a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox," Spencer explained. "It lets us continue to grow our community of people that care about the franchises that we have, and that’s really important for us to make sure we continue to invest in our games."
Spencer further elaborated on his belief in Nintendo's role in the gaming industry, stating, "I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them. And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future."
Phil Spencer has been a vocal supporter of the Nintendo Switch 2 since its first teaser, praising Nintendo's innovation. He confirmed that Xbox would continue to expand its game distribution across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When asked by Variety if the Switch 2 reveal made him eager to announce Xbox's next console lineup, Spencer remained focused on community and player base. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," he said. "I get inspired by what a lot of different creators do and other platform holders. But I believe in the plans that we have."
Spencer reiterated Xbox's strategy to make their games available on as many platforms as possible, including cloud, PC, and consoles. Games such as Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already been released on Nintendo platforms, and it will be intriguing to see what Xbox has in store for the Switch 2 once it officially launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to officially debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders have yet to go live, be sure to check our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for the latest updates on when they might become available.
