Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Don't worry, the Deadpool & Wolverine director is still hard at work on this exciting project, and we have a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, adding a hopeful note about the film's progress: "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
As it stands, details about the movie remain mostly under wraps, with one key fact being that it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed light on its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also confirmed in the same discussion that Levy's movie will hit the screens after the 2026 release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Another intriguing detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
With Tropper's optimistic comments, it seems that Levy's project is gaining momentum. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the earliest release is expected no sooner than the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027.
It's worth noting that Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the 2019 release of the critically divisive Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker. In the interim, several projects have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after stepping in for Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a pivotal character for Disney, with recent reports indicating she will feature in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
And that's not all on Disney's Star Wars slate. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode that promises an action-packed start.
