"Batman Podcast Launches New Companion Series"

Author : Claire May 28,2025

Superhero comics have transcended the traditional medium, inspiring not only movies and TV shows but also expansive podcasts and audio dramas. DC has recently launched its most ambitious podcast project yet with DC High Volume: Batman, a series that brings some of the Dark Knight’s most iconic comic book storylines to life in audio format. However, if you're only tuning into DC High Volume: Batman, you're missing out on a richer experience. DC is also rolling out a companion series within the same feed, hosted by writer and journalist Coy Jandreau. This companion series provides behind-the-scenes insights through interviews with the cast, crew, and creators who have inspired the project. The inaugural companion episode, set to release on Thursday, April 24, features Batman voice actor Jason Spisak and DC's Creative Director of Animation & Audio Content, Mike Pallotta.

IGN recently had the opportunity to speak with Jandreau over the phone to delve deeper into the series and its role as an extension of the DC High Volume: Batman saga. Continue reading to discover how these companion episodes will enhance your Batman journey.

What Is DC High Volume: Batman?

To fully grasp the purpose of the companion series, it's essential to understand DC High Volume: Batman. This groundbreaking series is a collaboration between DC and the podcast powerhouse Realm, offering a serialized audio drama based on iconic Batman comics such as Batman: Year One. The series features Jason Spisak voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jay Paulson as Jim Gordon.

"DC High Volume is the first of its kind at this scale, essentially a one-to-one adaptation of classic Batman comic books into an immersive audio long-format radio play," Jandreau explained to IGN. "It takes stories like Batman: Year One and The Long Halloween and transforms them into a comprehensive audio experience with outstanding production design, audio special effects, talented voice actors, and a score tailored to different characters. It's a fresh way to experience stories I've been reading my entire life."

Jandreau highlighted that the series aims to craft a continuous narrative using pivotal Batman graphic novels as key chapters. Starting with Batman and Gordon's origin story in Year One, it progresses into The Long Halloween, set in Batman's second year.

"The goal is to present the enduring Batman mythos in a new medium, appealing to both die-hard fans like myself who grew up with these characters and newcomers who might only know Batman from movies or animated series," Jandreau noted. "We're revisiting the roots to highlight the big moments within a shared universe, maintaining the same voice actors to ensure a growing, evolving narrative through these classic tales."

As a devoted comic book enthusiast, Jandreau finds value in re-experiencing these iconic stories in a new format, translating visually rich tales into a purely auditory journey.

"It's astonishing how much emotion and experience these stories convey differently through audio," Jandreau said. "It doesn't detract from the art; rather, it enhances it with sound. You can enjoy these episodes alone, in your car, with high-quality headphones, or even through tower speakers for a unique experience."

He added, "You can also listen while reading, which offers yet another layer of engagement. It's versatile enough to be enjoyed in various settings, from modern commutes to old-fashioned fireside chats, without diminishing the original comic's appeal."

The High Volume Companion Series

Jandreau's companion series serves as an enriching supplement to DC High Volume: Batman, exploring the intricacies of adapting comics into audio and showcasing the talent behind the scenes. Available both as audio episodes on the DC High Volume: Batman feed and as a standalone video series, the first episode launches on April 24, following closely behind the start of the Batman: The Long Halloween adaptation.

"This project has been in development for years before I joined, with a focus on highlighting the incredible behind-the-scenes talent," Jandreau shared. "From voice actors and composers to DC's own team and the original writers and artists, we aim to give listeners a deeper connection to these creators."

Jandreau's prior work on the DC Studio Showcase video series made him an ideal fit for this role. "I've been involved with DC Studio Showcase, a bi-weekly show on Max and its YouTube channel, covering the studio's efforts led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. As the comic correspondent, it's a dream to explore comics further through this new series."

In the debut companion episode, Jandreau's conversation with Jason Spisak delves into the challenges of voicing Batman and how his voice evolves depending on the characters he interacts with.

"Jason Spisak's portrayal of Batman in this universe is truly fascinating," Jandreau teased. "In Year One, we hear Bruce Wayne becoming Batman, which we've seen in various media, but hearing it is a unique experience. It's like watching the Bat voice develop on an equalizer, discovering different levels and how Batman's voice changes with Gordon, Alfred, and even within his own mind as he transitions into the Dark Knight."

When asked about the structure of the companion series, Jandreau clarified that it's not strictly tied to each chapter of DC High Volume: Batman but rather to key emotional and plot points.

"It's not a simple one-to-one match; we aim to follow significant moments," Jandreau explained. "For instance, our first episode follows a pivotal moment in the first issue of Long Halloween, allowing us to discuss the transition from Year One to Long Halloween, character development, and more. It's about hitting the emotional beats that resonate with both the interviewees and the audience at the right time."

Jandreau drew inspiration for his series from a blend of classic interview formats, citing Inside the Actors Studio, Hot Ones, and late-night talk shows like those hosted by Johnny Carson and Conan O'Brien.

"I'm inspired by James Lipton's long-form interviews, Sean Evans' ability to uncover new insights, and the energy of classic talk shows," Jandreau said. "I want to combine these elements to create a dynamic, engaging companion series."

The Future of DC High Volume: Batman

Looking forward, Jandreau expressed his desire to interview key figures like Jeph Loeb, the writer of The Long Halloween, and Jim Lee, his collaborator on Batman: Hush, especially given their involvement in the upcoming Batman: Hush project.

"Jim Lee's creative oversight and artistry at DC are incredibly inspiring," Jandreau said. "His work has influenced many of my favorite stories, and his insights are invaluable. Jeph Loeb's contributions to classic Batman narratives like Long Halloween and Dark Victory are foundational, and I'm eager to have a deep conversation with him."

Jandreau also mentioned Tom King, whose extensive Batman run included the notable marriage storyline with Catwoman. Although King's run is set later in Batman's timeline, Jandreau is keen to explore King's unique perspective on Batman.

"Tom King's background with the CIA gives him a Batman-adjacent life experience," Jandreau noted. "His approach to Batman, Catwoman, love, and pain deeply resonates with how I view Bruce Wayne. I'm excited about the possibility of discussing his work, especially with his involvement in projects like the Lantern show and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow."

Ultimately, Jandreau hopes that his companion series will foster positivity within the Batman fandom, providing a welcoming space for both seasoned comic enthusiasts and newcomers.

"The internet can be a hostile place, especially in fandoms where people are protective of their beloved stories," Jandreau said. "We want to celebrate the passion that keeps these stories thriving. By promoting positivity and inclusivity, we aim to create a new home for comic fans, inviting everyone to appreciate the special world of Batman without any gatekeeping."
