Poncle Discusses Film Adaptation Hurdles: 'Vampire Survivors Lacks Plot'

Author : Mia May 29,2025

If you're a fan of Vampire Survivors, you might already know that adapting this cult classic into another medium is proving to be quite the challenge. Initially announced as an animated series in 2023, the project has since shifted gears toward becoming a live-action film. However, developers Poncle has openly admitted that bringing Vampire Survivors to life outside of its original format is no easy feat.

As Poncle explained in a recent Steam post, the decision to partner with Story Kitchen came after much deliberation. The team wanted to ensure they found the perfect collaborators who could bring their unique vision to life. "To make anything that isn't a video game out of Vampire Survivors requires good ideas, creativity, and that quirky knowledge of the game," they stated. Achieving all three elements perfectly is easier said than done.

One of the biggest hurdles lies in the game's lack of a traditional narrative. Poncle humorously noted the irony of this fact, quipping, "the most important thing in Vampire Survivors is the story"—a nod to the game's mechanic-driven charm rather than a plot-centric focus. With no clear storyline to adapt, it remains uncertain how the film will unfold, and thus, a release date has yet to be announced.

Despite these challenges, Vampire Survivors has carved out a niche for itself as a fast-paced, over-the-top rogue-lite game steeped in gothic horror. Its addictive gameplay, which allows players to quickly overpower waves of enemies through strategic choices, has made it a standout success. Since its launch, Poncle has continued to expand the game's universe, introducing new characters, weapons, and even major expansions like the Ode to Castlevania DLC.

IGN praised Vampire Survivors for its depth hidden beneath its deceptively simple facade, calling it "an incredibly deep hole to fall down." While there are moments when the game's rhythm feels repetitive, its engaging mechanics keep players coming back for more. As Poncle navigates this new creative frontier, fans eagerly await the outcome of their ambitious endeavor.
