Learning to read involves mastering the art of pronouncing the sounds of letters, rather than just knowing their names. This skill is crucial for children as they embark on their reading journey.
A key player in a child's learning process is the adult who guides them. By engaging in specific exercises, adults can help children observe the correct mouth movements and learn how to position their lips to accurately pronounce sounds.
To achieve this, we select a group of less complex alphabet letters and form names of animals and everyday words with them. In this program, the focus is on the SOUND of the letter, not its name.
Initially, adults should practice with the child, understanding that reading is a process. Once the child is comfortable, they can be allowed to use the application independently, with periodic joint practice sessions. After some time, adults can move to the “Discover the Word” section and engage in a series of exercises with the child:
- Ask the child to pronounce the sound of the letters that make up the word TREE.
- After practicing for a while, ask, "What did you say?"
- Never tell the child what word they spoke.
We will repeat this exercise, encouraging the child to pronounce the sounds of the letters in the word TREE faster. By doing so, the gap between the pronunciation of each letter will decrease. We will continue this exercise, resisting the urge to tell the child what word they are pronouncing. One day, when asked, "What did you say?" the child will respond, "I said TREE!" At that moment, you can celebrate; the child has begun to read.
Soon, you will notice a keen interest in the child to read every word they encounter. This is the time to gradually introduce more complex sounds, such as the letter C, which can have a soft sound (as in "sky") or a hard sound (as in "house"), depending on the accompanying graphemes. Other letters of the alphabet that were initially omitted will also be introduced. It's essential to respect each child's pace and learning process.
