Warner Bros. Games has officially launched *Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition*, hailed as the most comprehensive version of the iconic and brutally violent fighting game to date. However, for many fans, this release has raised concerns that NetherRealm Studios may have shifted focus away from *Mortal Kombat 1*, potentially signaling an end to new DLC characters or major content updates.
The *Definitive Edition* bundles the core game with all previously released downloadable content, including the *Khaos Reigns* story expansion, *Kombat Pack 1*, and *Kombat Pack 2*. Additionally, it introduces fresh character skins for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan—reportedly inspired by the upcoming *Mortal Kombat 2* film—as well as a *Mortal Kombat (2021)* movie skin for Sub-Zero and a tournament-themed outfit for Liu Kang.
To many players, the arrival of the *Definitive Edition* feels like a closing chapter on *Mortal Kombat 1*. While definitive editions are standard practice for Warner Bros.—and especially common in NetherRealm titles—this one seems unusually final. With no official word on a potential *Kombat Pack 3* or other major content, fans fear that the March 2025 launch of the T-1000 guest fighter will mark the last piece of new content for the game.
This perceived abandonment comes as a letdown to dedicated *Mortal Kombat 1* fans, who had anticipated longer support for the title. In September 2024, NetherRealm co-founder Ed Boon attempted to calm such fears, stating that the studio remained “fully committed” to supporting the game “for a long time to come.” Yet now, many feel misled:
“The game is done, it’s their way of saying ‘Goodbye! Come back the next year or two for another overly priced game bloated with guest characters!’” — A disappointed Reddit user
“MK1 officially has a shorter content lifespan than the f***ing Texas Chainsaw Massacre game lmao,” — Another fan
For context, when NetherRealm announced in July 2021 that it had begun work on its next project—*Mortal Kombat 1*—it also confirmed that there would be no further DLC for *Mortal Kombat 11*. That decision came more than two years after the game's original launch. As of yet, no similar announcement has been made for *Mortal Kombat 1*, but the silence speaks volumes.
A brief resurgence occurred in January with the reveal of Floyd, the pink ninja developer Ed Boon had teased for years. The community-driven discovery effort brought a wave of excitement back into the game, offering a rare moment of joy amid otherwise lukewarm reception to the game’s overall rollout and post-launch support.
T-1000 Terminator marks the final DLC character added to *Mortal Kombat 1* under the *Khaos Reigns* expansion, following playable fighters Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Fans continue to speculate whether NetherRealm intends to release a third set of DLC characters or a *Kombat Pack 3*, particularly given uncertainty around the game’s commercial performance.
Despite these concerns, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has expressed continued confidence in the *Mortal Kombat* franchise. In November 2024, CEO David Zaslav stated the company plans to concentrate resources on just four flagship games—one of which is *Mortal Kombat*.

Many within the fanbase expect NetherRealm to eventually return to its acclaimed *Injustice* series, though neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has made any formal confirmation. The first installment, *Injustice: Gods Among Us*, launched in 2013, followed by *Injustice 2* in 2017. After *Mortal Kombat 11* dropped in 2019, it seemed the studio would alternate between the two franchises—but instead chose to reboot *Mortal Kombat* with *Mortal Kombat 1* in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Ed Boon offered vague insights into the decision: “There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn't.” Two reasons he did share included the impact of the global pandemic and the team’s shift to Unreal Engine 4 (from the older Unreal Engine 3 used in *Mortal Kombat 11*).
When asked directly if the *Injustice* franchise was permanently shelved, Boon responded confidently:
“Not at all.”
So far, over 5 million copies of *Mortal Kombat 1* have been sold, bringing the entire franchise sales total to 100 million units. By comparison, *Mortal Kombat 11* surpassed 15 million sales worldwide by 2022, making it the best-selling entry in the series. Clearly, *Mortal Kombat 1* has not matched the success of its predecessor, raising questions about how—or if—it will influence the future direction of the franchise.
