Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced

FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the traditional Soulsborne formula for its upcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign: the absence of an in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, anticipated to feature shorter play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system that has become a hallmark of the series.

The asynchronous messaging system, typically used for helpful hints, playful misdirection, or shared situational humor, has been a major contributor to player engagement in previous FromSoftware titles. However, this beloved feature will not be present in Nightreign.

Maintaining Asynchronous Elements

Despite this omission, FromSoftware isn't abandoning all asynchronous gameplay elements. Key features, such as the bloodstain mechanic, are returning, enhanced to allow players to not only observe how others perished but also to loot their spectral remains.

A More Focused Experience

The removal of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's goal to create a "compressed RPG" for Nightreign. The three-day structure and emphasis on intense, multiplayer-focused gameplay contribute to this vision of a streamlined, high-intensity experience with minimal downtime.

The game's 2025 release window was confirmed during its TGA 2024 reveal, though a specific launch date remains unannounced.
