Bethesda Clarifies: No Remake Planned for Oblivion, Only Updates

Author : Violet May 06,2025

Bethesda Game Studios has recently clarified why Virtuos’ newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered isn’t considered a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the iconic fantasy RPG series explained the distinction between a remaster and a remake, emphasizing their decision to remaster rather than remake the beloved classic.

Bethesda stated, "We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology." This statement underscores their intention to preserve the core experience of Oblivion while enhancing it with modern technology.

The release of Oblivion Remastered has sparked discussions among fans, especially as they get their first hands-on experience with the updated version. Available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, as well as through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the remaster introduces numerous visual enhancements and gameplay tweaks. Notable additions include the ability to sprint and a revamped level-up system that blends elements from both Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Despite the extensive changes, Bethesda insists that Oblivion Remastered is not a remake. They elaborated, "We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it. But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one." This approach aims to maintain the nostalgic feel of the original while making it accessible to new players.

Bethesda expressed gratitude to both new and returning players, hoping that everyone stepping out of the Imperial sewer feels like they are experiencing the game for the first time. They concluded, "We know many of our longtime fans will be thrilled to revisit Oblivion and the land of Cyrodiil. But there are also so many who have never played it. We can’t thank you enough for all the support you have given us and our games over the years."

For those diving into Oblivion Remastered, comprehensive resources are available, including an expansive Interactive Map, complete Walkthroughs for the Main Questline and every Guild Quest, guides on How to Build the Perfect Character, and a list of Things to Do First, ensuring players can fully enjoy their journey through Cyrodiil.
