Bethesda's Starfield initially featured planned gore and dismemberment mechanics, but technical constraints forced their removal. Dennis Mejillones, a former character artist who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of integrating these mechanics with the game's space suits proved insurmountable.
The intricate details required—precise helmet removal, realistic flesh simulations beneath the suits, and accounting for various suit configurations and body sizes—created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the resulting system as overly complex. He noted the evolution of the character creator also contributed to the difficulty.
While some fans expressed disappointment, particularly given Fallout 4's inclusion of such mechanics, Mejillones argued that the stylistic differences between the games justified the omission. He highlighted Fallout's "tongue-in-cheek" humor as a more fitting context for gore and dismemberment, stating it was "part of the fun."
Despite this absence, Starfield's September 2023 release attracted over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review praised the game's expansive RPG elements and combat, acknowledging challenges but highlighting its overall appeal.
Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer underscored the game's significant loading issues at launch, especially in Neon. Bethesda has since implemented improvements, including a 60fps performance mode, and released the "Shattered Space" expansion in September.
